BASIC GRAMMAR POINTS FOR IELTS TEST


There are some grammar points you need to master to be successful in the IELTS test.

1. Sentence Patterns

There are four kinds of sentence structures:

  • Simple sentence
  • Compound sentence
  • Complex sentence
  • Compound-complex sentence

2. Word order

Correct word order is an important thing indicating that you are ready for an IELTS test.

3. Tenses in English

Tenses are used to refer to the time an action occurs. There are 3 main tenses in English: past, present and future. Each tense has different types based on when and how they are utilized. For instance, the past perfect is used for an action happening before another action in the past.

4. Punctuation 

Mastering the punctuation is crucial for IELTS writing skill which makes a difference in the meaning of a sentence. 

5. Active or passive voice

While active voice is often used directly, passive one is in more formal situations. In spoken language and communication, people tend to utilize the active voice, whereas the passive is used in written or professional writings.

In part 1 of speaking test, test takers are asked some questions about familiar topics such as their house, family or hobby. In the next part, examinees present their ideas on a topic and have to answer some follow-up questions in part 3.
