HOW TO BOOST VOCABULARY FOR THE IELTS TEST


1. Use dictionaries to learn words and phrases every day

Idioms or idiomatic expressions are phrases that learners have to master before they could use them in conversations. The reasons for this are that we cannot understand their meaning basing on the meaning of each individual words. Hence, they play a crucial role in the process of language acquisition.

2. Read newspapers and magazines 

Reading is one of the fastest ways to boost new words. The sources for reading may be journals, best-seller novels or any kinds of magazines. In case of challenging words or phrases, you should use online dictionaries to look up their meanings.

3. Listen to news every night 

If you don’t like reading, you can enhance your vocabulary by listening to news on TV every evening and it should be your daily activity. Listening to news and observing the ways newscasters give news help you know how to use words and phrases effectively. In addition, you also can watch your favourite TV shows or plays and most importantly, focus on words and phrases. 

4. Read different topics 

You shouldn’t limit your reading in a few familiar topics. With a variety of topics, you can learn different styles and more abundant vocabulary. 

5. Use synonyms for common words 

A significant element of an IELTS test is testing learners’ advancement in using words. Thus, the repetition of words in your test should be avoided. Learning more synonyms means that you have various ways to express the same situation. 

6. Use collocations in communication 

Using collocations is necessary because they help you communicate like native speakers if you can use them in a fluent way.
