HOW TO DO TOEIC LISTENING SKILLS WELL

INTRODUCTION:

TOEIC Listening - Listening TOEIC is one of the two most important sections, weighted up to 495/990 points in the test. This exam aims to assess listening - comprehension skills and grasp information. Here are some technique to help you to do this part well.

CONTENT:

The Listening section consists of 100 listening comprehension questions divided into 4 parts from Part 1 to Part 4. Candidates will listen to it via cassette tape or CD for 45 minutes. Candidates will listen to descriptions, questions, conversations, and short talks in English, then choose answers based on what they have heard.

To listen most effectively, you need to know English as a part of life. If you are not used to it, then practicing TOEIC English listening a lot and continuously can easily make you tired, depressed, headache and irritability. It may be due to:

   - You rarely hear English.

   - Get used to listening only to short passages.

   - Always try to translate English into Vietnamese.

Therefore, the more you listen, the more terrible you feel, the more afraid you will be and you will never be able to improve your abilities. To overcome this situation, you should strongly "fight" the very things you are afraid of:

   - Listen a lot, listen anytime, anywhere. You don't have to hear everything clearly, but the goal of continuous listening is to get you used to the correct phonetics and pronunciation.

   - Listen to content for a longer duration (over 30 minutes) to gradually train your patience.

   - Learn how to think in English, do not try to translate Vietnamese content in a "word by word" style, but focus on grasping the meaning of the speaker.

* Part 1 - Photos

This section is the scoring section, which can be called the easiest part of the TOEIC test. In this part 1, to achieve a high TOEIC score, you need to take the following steps when taking the test and taking the test:

    - Observe the picture to prepare yourself psychologically for the vocabulary that may appear.

    - Answer 2 questions: What is(are) he(she, they) doing? Where is(are) he(she, they) doing that?

    - Always have a guess in English. Once you have a guess in your head, it will be easy to compare it with the sentence read in the tape.

    - Select the answer as soon as the tape is finished.

    - If you can't hear it, don't waste time regretting it.

    - Take advantage of the time between 2 sentences to analyze the next picture.

* Part 2 - Q&A

To do part 2 well, you need to pay attention:

    - Always identify the type of sentence that is spoken first.

    - If it is a question, it must be heard who what, when, where, why, or how. In case the answer is not clear, it is necessary to eliminate the answer that does not provide the necessary information.

    - Immediately remove yes/no answers to W/H questions.

    - If it is a Yes/No question or a tag question, it is important to note that the answer is not simply Yes or No.

    - In case it is not a question, there are the following sentences: sentence of order, sentence of complaint, question of health visit, sentence of description of the situation.

    - As soon as you finish listening to the first sentence, you must anticipate the answer in your head.

    - Correct answers are often extremely short or provide more information than required.

    - If you can't hear it, choose it, don't waste time thinking about that sentence. Prepare yourself for the next sentence

*Part 3 - Short Conversations:

When listening to part 3, it is necessary to pay attention:

    - Read and understand the question carefully.

    - The relationship between the speaker and the listener.

    - Where are they? – What topic are you talking about? – What is their problem?

    - Who are the names mentioned in the article?

    - Specific information: specific place, specific time, specific quantity.

    - Remember that the order of the questions follows the progress of the listening – the answers to the first questions are usually in the first paragraph, and questions 2 – 3 are usually in the middle and last paragraphs.

* Part 4 – Short Talks:

This part is said to be the most difficult part of the TOEIC listening practice, although the difficulty is the same as part 3, but because there is only 1 voice and it is the last part, when you do this part, you often feel tired and sleepy. In this section, attention should be paid to:

  - Again, read the questions and answers.

  - Determine what type of piece of information it is: news, ads, speeches, tutorials. Don't worry, this information is available when introducing the snippet

    - Identify who is speaking and pay close attention to the names mentioned in the questions and answers in the speech.

    - Pay close attention to specific information such as place names and numbers.

    - Remember that the order of the questions follows the progress of the listening – the answers to the first questions are usually in the first paragraph, and questions 2 – 3 are usually in the middle and last paragraphs.
