1. Beware of homonyms
Homophones are pronounced the same but have different meanings. For example, the word "spring" commonly means spring, but it also means a rolled, twisted piece of metal. By understanding homonyms and their uses, your writing will be more accurate and avoid using the wrong meaning.

For example: "I sea you new that cereal killer, two", this sentence does not make sense because it is a misspelled version of "I see you knew that serial killer, too" due to the presence of homonyms. The correct meaning of the sentence is I see you also know that serial killer.
You need to write specifically and precisely what you need, you should not express it in a verbose way with unnecessary, redundant sentences. To do this, when starting an article or paragraph, you only choose a topic you want to emphasize, then find many evidences around it. 

Using another language to express and defend a point of view is not easy, so you need to avoid verbosity as much as possible, diluting the content you want to emphasize. If you see a paragraph with three or more unnecessary sentences, rewrite it from the beginning.

For example: "Writing is important to improve your English. My friend loves writing. He also reads and teaches little kids. Writing can help you become a better speaker of English, too." These sentences are not grammatically incorrect, but they are too wordy and obscure. You could change them to: "Practicing your writing skills will improve all your English language skills. I know that because my friend, who teaches little kids, told me."
2. Avoid Ambiguity

When you write a sentence that can be interpreted in two or more ways, you can make the whole paragraph ambiguous. There are many ways to overcome this, but the easiest is to clarify the pronouns used in the sentence.

For example: "Mary told Sue that she was a good student." In this sentence, it is difficult to tell whether Mary or Sue is a good student.

The sentence is more explicit: "Mary described herself to Sue as a good student."
3. Avoid sentences that are too long or too short

When you are not yet proficient in English, using sentences that are too long will make it easy for you to make mistakes, confuse sentence components, or confuse readers. You should only use sentences with two clauses, one main and one subordinate. Using sentences that are too short will also make your writing become abrupt and disjointed.

For example, this sentence is grammatically correct but really gives you a headache:

Cẩn thận với các từ đồng âm

Từ đồng âm được đọc giống nhau nhưng lại có nghĩa khác biệt. Chẳng hạn, từ "spring" có nghĩa phổ biến là mùa xuân, nhưng nó cũng chỉ một mảnh kim loại cuộn, xoắn. Khi nắm chắc các từ đồng âm và cách sử dụng của chúng, bài viết của bạn sẽ chính xác hơn, tránh trường hợp dùng sai nghĩa của từ.

 

Ví dụ: "I sea you new that cereal killer, two", câu này không mang nghĩa bởi nó được viết nhầm từ câu "I see you knew that serial killer, too" do có các từ đồng âm. Nghĩa đúng của câu là Tôi thấy bạn cũng biết kẻ giết người hàng loạt đó.

 

Cụ thể

 

Bạn cần viết cụ thể và chính xác những gì mình cần, không nên diễn đạt rườm rà với những câu thừa, không cần thiết. Để làm được điều này, khi bắt đầu một bài, đoạn, bạn chỉ chọn một chủ đề mình muốn nhấn mạnh, sau đó tìm nhiều dẫn chứng xoay quanh nó.

 

Việc dùng một ngôn ngữ khác để diễn đạt, bảo vệ quan điểm là điều không dễ dàng nên bạn cần tránh tối đa việc rườm rà, làm loãng nội dung muốn nhấn mạnh. Nếu thấy một đoạn văn có ba câu không cần thiết trở lên, hãy viết lại từ đầu.

 

Ví dụ: "Writing is important to improve your English. My friend loves writing. He also reads and teaches little kids. Writing can help you become a better speaker of English, too." (Viết là kỹ năng quan trọng cần nâng cao trong tiếng Anh. Bạn tôi yêu viết lách. Anh ấy cũng hay đọc và dạy trẻ nhỏ. Kỹ năng viết cũng có thể giúp bạn nói tiếng Anh tốt hơn). Những câu này không sai ngữ pháp nhưng quá rườm rà và tối nghĩa.

 

Bạn có thể sửa thành: "Practicing your writing skills will improve all your English language skills. I know that because my friend, who teaches little kids, told me". (Luyện tập viết sẽ giúp bạn cải thiện toàn bộ kỹ năng trong tiếng Anh. Tôi biết điều này nhờ một người bạn là giáo viên cho trẻ nhỏ đã nói với tôi).

 

Tránh mơ hồ

 

Khi viết một câu có thể hiểu được theo hai hoặc nhiều nghĩa, bạn có thể khiến cả đoạn văn trở nên tối nghĩa. Có nhiều cách để khắc phục điều này nhưng dễ nhất là làm rõ các đại từ được sử dụng trong câu.

 

Ví dụ: "Mary told Sue that she was a good student" (Mary nói với Sue rằng cô ấy là học sinh giỏi). Trong câu này, thật khó để phân biệt Mary hay Sue mới là học sinh giỏi.

 

Câu khi đã được diễn đạt tường minh hơn: "Mary described herself to Sue as a good student" (Mary mô tả mình là học sinh giỏi với Sue).

Tránh những câu quá dài, quá ngắn

 

Khi chưa thành thạo tiếng Anh, việc dùng các câu quá dài sẽ khiến bạn rất dễ sai, nhầm lẫn các thành phần của câu hoặc gây khó hiểu cho người đọc. Bạn chỉ nên dùng câu có hai mệnh đề, một chính và một phụ. Việc dùng những câu quá ngắn cũng khiến bài viết của bạn trở lên cộc lốc, đứt đoạn liên tục.

 

Ví dụ, câu này đúng ngữ pháp nhưng thực sự khiến bạn đau đầu:

 

"Writing is an art that you, my dear reader, should master if you really want to convey your message properly and make the reader feel that what you have to say is not only interesting but also necessary for them to read and analyze during the process of reading it."
