IELTS Writing Task 2: 7 steps to achieve a score of 7.0
Step 1: Answer all parts of the question
The IELTS writing test part 2 requires you to write an essay in response to a statement, or a premise. You
must read the question carefully so that all parts are answered. For example, in the question below, you
have to do three things to get an upgrade in the writing scale, by showing the examiner that you tackled
all the parts in the test.
- Present a point of view
- Present a different perspective
- Present your point of view
Step 2: Present your point of view clearly
Even though you analyze different viewpoints in your essay, you must clearly present the viewpoint you
support. This simply means that you must let the examiner know what you think about the question.
The point of view you support must be clear in order to provide a complete essay. Don't change your
mind about the conclusion.
Both views put forward valid points, however, I strongly believe...
However, many people feel that...
I believe that wild creatures should not be kept in zoos...
Step 3: Structure your essay
Writing an essay is not always a difficult task. Present your ideas in a structured way, using paragraphs
to present and develop each idea. Use the following points to help you structure your essay.
Point the reader to the beginning with an introduction.
Present the important idea and then get even more specific.
End the essay with your opinion on the question.
Develop a clear idea for each paragraph.
Make it easy for the examiner to follow by leaving space between each paragraph.
