SOME TIPS FOR TACKLING PART 7 OF THE TOEIC TEST
Part 7 is considered the most challenging section in the TOEIC Reading test. One reason is its length, with 48 questions divided into two parts: 28 questions for 6-9 individual passages, and 20 questions for two paired passages, where you have to answer 5 questions for each passage.
Particularly, Part 7 comes at the end of the test, after tackling 152 questions in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. By this point, your spirits and mental energy may be depleted, making it crucial to recognize and avoid traps without much thinking. To be able to identify traps effortlessly, we need to first familiarize ourselves with them.
Getting accustomed to the traps in this section can be achieved through practice with simulated exercises and reading similar passages. By exposing yourself to the questions and structures found in this part, you will become familiar with how the traps are presented and easily spot them during the actual test.
Furthermore, maintaining alertness and concentration throughout the exam is essential. Reading the questions carefully before reading the passage will help you search for the necessary information and avoid getting off track. Pay close attention to keywords, synonyms, and specific details in the passage, as they are often where traps are hidden.
Here are some tips for tackling Part 7:
1. Identify the main idea of the passage: When taking the reading test, it's not necessary to read the entire passage in detail. Instead, skim through it to grasp the main idea. Having an accurate understanding of the main idea helps in aligning the specific details with the author's intent.
2. Differentiate the usage of synonymous words: It's important to have a solid grasp of the meanings and usage of synonymous vocabulary. While some words may seem interchangeable, in certain contexts they need to be distinguished in their usage.
3. Depending on different contexts and situations, different vocabulary will be used.
Familiarize yourself with the structure of the passage and answer related questions: In Part 7, you will encounter various types of passages, such as letters, advertisements, notices, bulletins, etc. To perform well in this section, identify the type of passage and try to form possible ideas for each one.
4. Focus on answering "who, what, where, when" questions related to the passage: Attempt to answer questions related to the passage to easily locate information in the question and answer choices. For example, try listing: Who is involved in this passage? What is the topic of the passage? Where/when does the passage take place?
5. Pay attention to tense indicators: Notice tense indicators such as adverbs (yet, since, already, soon...) to quickly determine the tense without having to interpret the entire sentence.
6. Consider doing Part 7 first: If you are concerned about losing focus towards the end of the test, consider doing Part 7 of the TOEIC test first. This section also requires a high level of concentration. If you are in a confident and calm state of mind, you can tackle the other sections with ease and confidence.
By keeping these tips in mind, you can approach Part 7 of the TOEIC Reading test more effectively and increase your chances of success.
