SOME TIPS FOR USING ADJECTIVES
I. Definition:
Adjective is a word used to describe the characteristics, qualities, or traits of a person, object, or phenomenon. Additionally, adjectives serve as modifiers for nouns.
For example:
• He is intelligent.
• She is kind and friendly.
II. Position of adjectives in a sentence:
1. Adjectives come before nouns
In English, adjectives typically come before the noun they modify, providing specific and detailed descriptions to provide clear information to the reader.
For example:
• A nice man.
• A delicious cup of milk tea.
2. Adjectives come after linking verbs
Adjectives in English can also be used after certain verbs such as "to be," "become," "taste," "smell," "sound," "feel," "look," "appear," "seem," etc.
For example:
• He smells burning.
• She feels tired.
3. Order of adjectives:
The arrangement of adjectives follows the OSASCOMP rule:
• O – Opinion
Adjectives expressing opinions, evaluations, judgments, or attitudes.
Example: Nice, beautiful, lovely, excellent, etc.
• S – Size
Adjectives related to size, length, height, etc., of the object.
Example: Tall, small, large, big, etc.
• A – Age
Adjectives indicating age.
Example: Old, young, etc.
• S – Shape:
Adjectives describing the shape of the object mentioned.
Example: Square, round, oval, etc.
• C – Color
Adjectives indicating color when placed before the noun.
Example: Black, pink, yellow, purple, grey, etc.
• O – Original
• Adjectives indicating the origin or source of the object mentioned.
• Example: Vietnamese, Japanese, American, etc.
M – Material
• Adjectives describing the material of the object mentioned.
• Example: Wood, porcelain, cotton, leather, plastic, etc.
P – Purpose
• Adjectives indicating the purpose or appearance of the noun.
• Example: Hound dog, washing machine, etc.
