SOME TIPS TO IMPROVE PRONUNCIATION OF THE “ED” ENDING


 

1. /t/ sound

Use /t/ when the verb ends in these voiceless sounds: /p/, /k/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/ (sh), /tʃ/ (ch)

Verb                    Pronunciation                      Example

Help   helped /helpt/ I helped her.

Laugh laughed /læft/ He laughed loudly.

Watch watched /wɒtʃt/ They watched TV

 

2. /d/ sound

 Use /d/ when the verb ends in voiced sounds (not including /d/), like: /b/, /g/, /v/, /z/, /ʒ/, /m/, /n/, /l/, /r/, vowel sounds…

Play played /pleɪd/ She played the piano.

Call called /kɔːld/ He called me yesterday.

Clean cleaned /kliːnd/ They cleaned the room.

 

3. /ɪd/ or /əd/ sound

 Use /ɪd/ (or /əd/) when the verb ends in /t/ or /d/
