SOME TIPS TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILLS
INTRODUCTION:
To have correct and coherent writing style, learners need to master grammar points and accumulate a rich vocabulary. Depending on the level and different learning/working purposes, the writing style will be different. This causes writers to encounter many difficulties, even for native speakers. So how can you improve your writing skills? I would like to share a few tips that may help you confidently improve your writing skills.
CONTENT:
1. Practice reading more
Practicing reading regularly helps you accumulate new vocabulary and structures. Books always contain a lot of knowledge and good writing. You should put a small notebook next to it when reading to jot down good ideas when needed.
2. Determine the purpose of the article
An email complaining about a company's service will be different from an email introducing a product/service, or an essay about the social situation will be different from an essay applying for a scholarship. Clearly analyzing the audience and purpose of the article helps you choose the most appropriate and accurate writing style.
3. Use the words you just learned immediately
A noticeable feature is that we usually only use 2/3 of the total vocabulary we know. Therefore, in the process of practicing writing, you should try to apply the words you have just learned into sentences. A notebook to note new words is essential. Be careful with homophones. Homophones are pronounced the same but have different meanings. For example, the word "spring" commonly means spring, but it also refers to a coiled, twisted piece of metal. When you firmly grasp homonyms and their usage, your writing will be more accurate and avoid using the wrong meaning of words.
4. Make a detailed outline
There is a saying: "If you don't know where to go, then you'll go to where you don't want". Creating a detailed outline helps you have an overview of the article's structure, as well as choose the correct presentation ideas. Avoid ambiguity: When you write a sentence that can be understood in two or more senses, you can make the entire paragraph obscure. There are many ways to fix this, but the easiest is to clarify the pronouns used in the sentence.
5. Write things you like
Motivation is the important factor that makes you study/work. Don't be reluctant to write about problems that are too difficult or unfamiliar to you. First of all, practice presenting topics you really love in English and try to perfect your writing as best as possible. Then, ask your teacher to give you feedback. You will definitely feel very happy and motivated to continue writing after receiving feedback. Avoid sentences that are too long or too short: When you are not fluent in English, using sentences that are too long will make it easy for you to make mistakes, confuse the components of the sentence, or make it difficult for the reader to understand.
6. Practice writing a lot
There is no other way to write well than to practice writing a lot. Write intentionally and regularly every day. If possible, find someone with good writing skills to edit your sentences and get more feedback. Or you can use spelling error detection applications like Grammarly, Grammar Check,... to use sentences more accurately.
If you still haven't trained yourself in the habit of writing every day, you can also create a weekly writing plan for yourself. There will be a fixed day during the week to practice writing. You can write 2 tasks at a time or one task a week and then review. Setting a suitable writing schedule and trying to stick to it regularly will create writing momentum and positive habits, from which your writing ability will also improve.
CONCLUSION:
Above are instructions to help you practice your Writing skills. Hopefully this knowledge will help you in the process of reaching and conquering your target IELTS score band.
