Tips for Using ChatGPT Effectively
1. Provide More Context in Your Prompt
The prompt is the foundation of any AI tool. It contains all the information that a user gives the AI to do what they want it to do. You can use ChatGPT to ask general questions and get generic answers. However, the more specific, detailed, and contextual the prompt is, the more useful the response ChatGPT will return.
2. Require a Specific Style and Format
One trick to using ChatGPT to write content is to require it to follow a specific style and format. You can add commands to the prompt, such as “Use language that is understandable to 5th graders” or “Write persuasive content in a narrative style; use metaphors, similes, and other literary devices to make your points more understandable and memorable. Write in a way that is both informative and entertaining.”
3. Ask for “role-playing”
Each conversation with ChatGPT is like a blank sheet of paper, it has no information about the context or purpose of what the user wants it to do. But if you give it a specific role, it will have a direction to respond. You need to describe very clearly the role you want them to perform in the prompt, or use a simple structure “As a [occupation / role], you should…”
4. Ask for new perspectives and ideas
Users can come up with a topic and ask ChatGPT to write about it from a different perspective or point of view. This way, we can explore many new ideas and add depth to our writing. Of course, many ideas will be general and some will be completely silly. However, you can refine it by adding more specific context to the chat box.
5. Ask for improvement during the conversation
During a continuous conversation, ChatGPT can “learn” the given context to apply to the next answer.
Therefore, you can improve the AI’s response by adding more information or more detailed instructions, such as asking the AI “Please add more expert opinions to the article, using the information provided below”.
You can also ask ChatGPT to “Think the other way around” if the AI continues to come up with incorrect conclusions.
6. Ask ChatGPT to always ask questions before answering
Users can write this request in the prompt, such as “Please always ask questions before answering to better segment what the questioner is looking for. Do you agree with this?” This will make ChatGPT always ask for more information to be able to generate more accurate answers.
7. Give ChatGPT information up front
This helps frame the bot’s knowledge, so it knows what it needs to know — and what it doesn’t.
8. Focus on exploiting ChatGPT's strengths
Major technology companies such as NVIDIA, Google, Microsoft have provided guidance on situations where using large language models (including ChatGPT) will be effective, such as: summarizing existing text, searching for information in text, rewriting text, generating text, translating, classifying content, extracting content, etc.
