Traditional customs during the traditional Tet holiday of Vietnamese people


1. Worshiping Mr. Cong and Mr. Tao

The day to worship Mr. Cong and Mr. Tao is the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month. On this day, every Vietnamese family will clean the kitchen, buy goldfish, clothes, and gold coins to worship so that Mr. Cong and Mr. Tao will return to heaven to announce their offerings. Report everything that happened to the homeowner during the past year to the Jade Emperor. In particular, after offering goldfish, they will be released and released into rivers and streams.

2. Wrapping banh chung

"New tree, firecrackers, green banh chung" is Tet, so banh chung is indispensable. Depending on the conditions of each family, there are families who pack banh chung from December 23, and also on the 27th and 28th. 29 New Year's Eve makes banh chung and has banh chung to celebrate Tet as a gift to brothers and relatives.

The North often wraps banh chung and the south wraps banh tet. It seems that thanks to the wrapping of banh chung and banh tet, Tet becomes more cozy and meaningful.

3. Playing with flowers during Tet

The typical Tet flower in the North is the northern peach blossom, while in the South it is the apricot blossom, which is also a flower that only blooms during Tet. In addition, families also play with kumquat trees, one of the trees that symbolize luck, happiness, prosperity, or chrysanthemums, longevity flowers... to decorate the house more cheerfully and bring good fortune into the house.

4. Preparing five-fruit tray

Tet is indispensable for a five-fruit tray consisting of 5 different fruits. Each different region displays a five-fruit tray with different fruits. But the general meaning of the five-fruit tray is to show respect to heaven and earth, to ancestors, and to pray for a new year with lots of luck, prosperity, and fortune.

5. Cleaning the house

On the occasion of Tet, Vietnamese families have the habit of cleaning the house to remove all the misfortunes of the old year and prepare to welcome the new year with more luck and fortune.

Of course, the Lunar New Year is also seen as a chance for changes and refreshments. After cleaning and arranging all things neatly, they will embellish their homes with various kinds of flowers, such as peach blossom trees or ochna trees. This plays an indispensable role when the New Year approaches.

In addition, the Vietnamese also buy various new items and furniture for the coming New Year. They believe that the fuller a house is, the more prosperous the house owners would be in the future.

6. Preparing traditional cuisine

The Vietnamese have special dishes for almost all traditional events. Certainly, they will also prepare many delicious meals during the Tet holiday.

They have been preparing some cooking ingredients for a half month until the beginning, and some dishes that can be stored in the refrigerator even at normal temperatures during the Tet holiday will be used gradually.

One of the most meaningful activities on the must-do list is that all members will gather to make Banh Chung (in North Vietnam) or Banh Tet (in South Vietnam) from the 28th to the 30th of the last month of the lunar calendar.

7. Visiting ancestors' graves

12. Happy New Year

During Tet, Vietnamese people have a custom of wishing relatives and friends "The first day is Father's Day, the second day is Mother's Day, and the third day is Teacher's Day". On this occasion, everyone gives each other the best wishes and does not forget to give lucky money envelopes.

13. Go to the temple at the beginning of the year

Going to pagoda at the beginning of the year is a spiritual beauty of Vietnamese people. People and families go to temples both to show respect to Buddha and ancestors and to pray for a new year with good luck, fortune, and peace for the whole family.

14. Exodus

At the end of the first day of Tet, many families still look at the date and direction to depart to pray for a new year with many advantages, especially in work, business, and study.

15. Receiving lucky money

This is a traditional activity on the first days of the new year. As the name implies, “lucky money” is a small gift sent to you from someone else to wish you a happy and prosperous year.
