WAYS TO IMPROVING PRONUNCIATION FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS

1. Observe and mimic native speakers

Listening to others speaking is one of the most important things you should consider in order to improve your pronunciation. It is similar to the way children learn how to speak from their parents. A lot of learners can enhance their pronunciation by listening to others speaking.

When you listen to others, your ears are working, too. At the same time, listeners’ ears are focusing on unfamiliar sounds that native speakers are making. The more you listen, the better your pronunciation is.

2. Choose the kind of English suitable for you

While practicing listening to native speakers, pay attention to their accents. English is a universal language and each part of the world speaks English with a slight difference. You can make your own decision on the English accent you want to learn: British English, American English or Australian English. Once you have decided the type of English you want to learn, you must consider the accent you want to practice. Through choosing the English accent, you can identify your goals.

Note all the difficulties in pronunciation in a diary. This will guide you in improving your pronunciation and it is also a proof for your enhancement. In addition, this diary helps you to differentiate the challenging sounds and motivate you in learning.

3. Learn how to pronounce standardized vowels

It is more challenging to pronounce the vowels well than consonants. There is one stressed syllable in a word and the other syllables which are not stressed are similar. An example of this is uh, which is also called “schwa”.

4. Learn how to put the stress correctly

Stress is an important part of English pronunciation. You should make a list of English pronunciation and pay attention to the stress. You can also know the meaning of the words by doing this.

  • The stress is in the first syllable if the word is a noun or an adjective with two syllables.
  • The stress is in the second syllable for two-syllable verbs.
  • With two or more than two-syllable words, the stress is in the third or the last syllable.

English has a lot of pronunciation rules as well as exceptions. Even some native speakers cannot pronounce the long and difficult words well.
