Nowadays, the applications such as ChatGPT, Google Translate, and DeepL Translator can instantly translate texts, explain grammar, and even help users write essays and emails. Because of these impressive capabilities, some people believe that learning and taking English exams are no longer necessary. However, in my opinion, learning English is still extremely important, even in the era of artificial intelligence.

First of all, English remains the most widely used international language in the world. It is the language of global communication. Millions of books, research articles, websites, and online courses are written in English. Although AI can translate information, people who understand English directly can access knowledge more accurately and more efficiently. They do not have to rely completely on machines, which may sometimes produce incorrect or unnatural translations. 

Another important reason is that English helps people communicate confidently with others. Language is much more than translating words. It involves expressing emotions, understanding cultural nuances, and responding appropriately in real-life situations. When traveling abroad, attending international conferences, or working with foreign colleagues, people need to speak and understand English naturally. AI can support communication, but it cannot replace the confidence and flexibility that come from genuine language ability. 

In addition, English proficiency creates valuable educational and career opportunities. Many multinational companies, international organizations, and universities require applicants to demonstrate their English ability through English certificates. These qualifications show that a person can read, write, listen, and speak effectively in academic and professional environments. Even if AI tools are widely available, employers and institutions still need evidence that candidates possess real language skills. 

Furthermore, relying too heavily on AI can lead to serious problems. Artificial intelligence is a useful assistant, but it is not always accurate. It may misunderstand context, mistranslate idioms, or generate information that is grammatically correct but factually incorrect. Users who lack English knowledge may be unable to identify these errors. In contrast, learners with a solid foundation in English can evaluate AI-generated content critically and make necessary corrections.

Learning English also develops many important personal skills. Studying a foreign language improves memory, critical thinking, problem-solving, and cultural awareness. It teaches learners how to organize ideas, analyze information, and express themselves clearly. These skills are beneficial not only in language learning but also in many other areas of life. Some people argue that because AI can translate and generate language instantly, learning English is a waste of time. Just as calculators do not eliminate the need to learn mathematics, AI does not eliminate the need to learn English.
