Innovative Learning Through Music: A Student Wins Third Prize for Research on English Language Acquisition (Duy Tan University)


On June 7, 2024, Duy Tan University held its Scientific Research Conference, showcasing twenty outstanding research projects by its students across four fields: Science and Technology, Computer Science, Health Sciences, and Socio-Economic Sciences. Among these projects, the research titled "Studying Methods of Learning English through English Songs by English Majors at Duy Tan University" by Nguyen Thi To Uyen, a student from the English Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, won third prize in the Socio-Economic Sciences category.

Before presenting at the DTU-level conference, To Uyen had showcased her research in multiple rounds, from faculty-level to university-level, and finally to the subcommittee for Socio-Economic Sciences. Her project was highly regarded by the councils at all levels, earning her a spot at the DTU conference.

In today’s era of industrialization and modernization, English is one of the most widely used languages globally. Listening and speaking are particularly essential skills for beginners. However, learners often struggle with communicating effectively with native speakers. To Uyen's research aimed to propose an interesting and effective method of learning by integrating the practice of listening and speaking skills through favorite English songs. This approach targets not only English majors but also the broader English learning community.

Her research provided fundamental knowledge about vocabulary, grammar, and phonetic phenomena such as linking sounds. It then compiled and analyzed survey and experimental results to propose applicable suggestions for incorporating this method into teaching and learning programs both in schools and in practical settings. The study could help students find a fun and suitable way to improve their listening and pronunciation skills.

To Uyen shared: "Since my freshman year, I was curious about scientific research and realized that participating could help me discover and learn many new things. I began researching in my second year, though initially, I made many mistakes. The inspiration for this study came from my previous, unfinished research projects. Thanks to the advice and encouragement from Dr. Tran Thi Minh Giang, my supervising lecturer, I decided to revisit and refine my old research, but from a fresh and practical perspective. I am incredibly grateful for Dr. Giang’s patient guidance and impartial feedback, which gave me confidence in my work."

Throughout her research journey, To Uyen faced numerous challenges, from identifying past mistakes to conducting surveys and experiments, and continuously correcting new errors to complete her project. Despite these difficulties, her passion for research drove her to strive for the best possible outcome. To Uyen expressed: "I was both surprised and delighted to learn that I had won third prize. To me, this achievement is a source of immense pride and a stepping stone to confidently participate in future competitions."
