LEARNING ENGLISH IN THE MODERN WORLD

Level: A2 | Topic: Education and Technology

Page 1: Why Is English Important Today?

English is one of the most popular languages in the world. Millions of people use English to communicate with others, study, work, and travel. Today, learning English is becoming more and more important, especially for young people. Many students learn English at school, and some students also attend English classes after school.

There are many reasons why people want to learn English. First, English helps people communicate with people from different countries. For example, when Vietnamese students meet foreign visitors, they can use English to introduce themselves, ask questions, and talk about their daily lives. English is also useful when people travel abroad. They can ask for directions, order food in restaurants, book hotel rooms, and understand signs at airports.

Second, English is important for education. Many books, websites, and online courses are written in English. Students who understand English can find more information about science, history, technology, and many other subjects. They can also watch educational videos and take online courses from different countries. In this way, English helps students improve their knowledge and learn new skills.

Third, English can help people find better job opportunities in the future. Many companies work with international customers and partners. They often need employees who can speak English. For example, people working in tourism, business, technology, and education may use English every day. Therefore, students who learn English well may have more choices when they look for jobs.

However, learning English is not always easy. Some students find English grammar difficult. Others have problems remembering new words or pronouncing words correctly. Many students can understand English when they read a text, but they feel nervous when they speak. They are afraid of making mistakes or being laughed at by their classmates.

In fact, making mistakes is a normal part of learning a language. Students should not feel embarrassed when they make mistakes. Instead, they should learn from them and try again. The more they practise, the more confident they will become.

There are many simple ways to improve English skills. First, students should practise English every day. They do not need to study for many hours. Even fifteen or twenty minutes a day can be helpful if they use the time well. For example, they can learn five new words, read a short story, or listen to a short English conversation.

Second, students should develop all four English skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To improve listening, they can listen to English songs, podcasts, or videos. They should choose materials that are suitable for their level. At first, they can listen with subtitles. Later, they can try listening without subtitles to understand more English.

To improve speaking, students can practise with their friends, teachers, or family members. They can talk about familiar topics such as food, hobbies, school, sports, and daily activities. They can also speak to themselves in English. For example, they can describe what they are doing or talk about their plans for the weekend. These activities help them use English naturally.

Reading is another useful way to learn English. Students can read short stories, simple news articles, and books that they enjoy. When they find new words, they should try to understand their meanings from the context before using a dictionary. They do not need to understand every word to understand the main idea of a text.

Writing can also help students remember vocabulary and grammar. They can write a short diary, describe their family, or send simple messages in English. At the beginning, they should focus on writing clear sentences. As they improve, they can write longer paragraphs and use more complex structures.

Today, technology offers many opportunities for learning English. Students can use mobile applications, online dictionaries, educational websites, and videos. Some applications help learners practise pronunciation, while others provide vocabulary games and grammar exercises. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools can also help students understand difficult words, check their writing, and practise conversations.

However, students should use technology carefully. They should not depend completely on translation tools or AI. If they always copy answers without thinking, they may not improve their English skills. Instead, they should try to understand the answers, practise independently, and check information when necessary. They should also spend less time on unhelpful online activities and more time practising English.

In conclusion, English is an important skill in the modern world. It helps people communicate, study, travel, and find jobs. Although learning English takes time and effort, everyone can make progress with the right methods. Students should practise regularly, learn from their mistakes, and choose interesting learning materials. Most importantly, they should be patient and never give up. Every new word they learn and every sentence they practise brings them one step closer to their goals.
