Overall reading comprehension strategy for a TOEFL Reading test

Since the TOEFL Reading test contains a lot of difficult academic vocabulary, to optimize test time, here is a general approach to a basic reading passage.

1. Using the Skimming technique for general information

Similar to academic English certificates, to be able to search or analyze the main content, learners should learn the Skimming technique - skimming the entire article to determine the general information that needs to be summarized.

2. Applying the Scanning technique to detailed information

To find detailed information in long academic texts, learners should use the information scanning technique. Learners will scan the information through keywords, or words that have been rewritten from the question to find the information needed.

3. Identify the structure of the reading

Based on some basic structures of the TOEFL Reading test, learners should determine which structure the article is built on, or what structure the writing flow of the article resembles. Identifying the structure will help learners get the general idea and how to develop ideas typical of the structure, thereby locating the answer faster.

4. Selecting according to the question requirements

Students can optimize their test time by reading the questions and using scanning techniques to find the necessary passages according to the question, and find the correct answer. During the test, students should optimize their time by limiting the time to answer each question. Students should only spend about 1.5 minutes on each question and skip if they cannot find the answer within the minimum time. After completing all possible questions, students will return to the remaining questions.
