raps that often appear in the TOEIC Listening part 1 test (P1)

In Part 1 Listening Test, you easily encounter some following traps:

Trap 1: The picture is singular but the answer is plural

Example:

A: The mugs are placed next to the book.

B: The laptop is turned on.

C: The table is being cleaned.

D: The book is closed.

Trap answer: A. (The cups are placed next to the book). In the photo there is a cup, so when you look at answer A you will see that it seems correct. However, there is only 1 cup (singular), so answer A is wrong because the subject is plural.

Tips to avoid traps:

• Look closely at the photo

• You need to listen carefully to see if there is an "s, es" after the subject. Another sign to distinguish the singular from the plural is the verb that follows it (are is plural, is is singular,...)

Trap 2: The answer is clearly wrong but contains keywords related to the image

For example:

A. He is washing the cow

B. He is petting the animal.

C. He is running around the barn.

D. He is going over the fence.

Trap answer: A. Answer A has the word "cow": cow. And there is also a cow in the picture, however, the action of "washing" is not correct so this answer is wrong.

Tips to avoid traps:

• Don't rush to hear a keyword and then choose it, because this is most likely a trap.

• It is necessary to consider whether the accompanying action is correct or not.
