SOME TIPS FOR TOEIC LISTENING – PART 2 – WH_QUESTIONS


- QUESTIONS WITH WHERE: 

1. Prepositions (in /on / at …) + place

Ex: -Where are you going to spend your vacation?

- In Rome.

2. Go to +place / to + place

Ex: - Where is the Sales Department?

      - Go up to the third floor.

3. Adverbial phrases of place

Ex: - Where is City Hall?

- It’s next to the library.

4. Answer with no direct references of place

Ex: - Where is the annual report? 

      - Maria took it this morning.

- QUESTIONS WITH WHEN:

1. Time expressions + ago

Ex: - When did you finish the report?

    - Two days ago.

2. When + past tense verbs

Ex:- When did you know about this retirement?

        - When I visited the company.

3. Prepositions (at / on /in / by…) + future time

Ex: - When are you leaving for vacation?

         - On Friday.

4. When + present tense verbs

Ex: - When are you going to buy this item?

         - When prices fall.

5. Not until + Future time

Ex: - When do you expect the project to be finished?

         - Not until July.

- QUESTIONS WITH WHO:

1. Personal names

Ex:- Who has been invited to the banquet? -> Mr. Martinez.

2. Positions / ranks /titles

Ex: - Who is in charge of the marketing department now?

        - The former sales director.

3. Company /department names.

Ex: - Who has the new office building? -> The Design-House Company.

4. Personal pronouns

Ex: - Who has the annual budget report? ->  I do.

5. “I don’t know” type

Ex:- Who will be in charge of the project?

       - It hasn’t been decided yet.

- QUESTIONS WITH WHAT

1. Nouns that refer to time, colors and categories (What time…?/What color…?/What kind of…?)

Ex: -What time will the movie start?

     - Five o’clock.

    - What color would you like the outside to be?

    - Green.

2. Imperatives ( What should I do…?)

Ex: - What should I do with this package? 

     - Give it to the manager.

3. Objects of transitive verbs.

Ex: - What did you buy yesterday?

      - Office supplies.

4. Personal opinions ( What do you think of…?/ What’s your opinion…?)

Ex: - What’s your opinion of the bank’s new lending policy?

      - I think it’s a little bit dangerous 

- QUESTIONS WITH WHY

1. to + verb ( to express purposes / intentions)

Ex: - Why are you going to Paris on Friday?

      - To help open our new branch.

2. Because / Due to / For…

Ex: - Why are you working so late this evening?

     - Because I have to finish this project.

3. Omission of because

Ex: - Why did we change our office supplier?

     - (Because) Their deliveries were always late.

4. Explanations/ Personal opinions (Why…not?)

Ex: - Why aren’t the computers working?

      - I think there is a problem with the main power.

5. That’s a good idea/ That sounds great/…(Why don’t…)

       EX: Why don’t we go shopping?

             That’s a good idea

1. Quantities (How much…? / How many…?)

Ex: - How much is this stapler?

     - Two dollars.

2. Durations of time ( How long…?), frequency ( How often…?)

Ex: - How long have you been here?

     - Two years.

3. Point of time ( How soon/quickly…?)

Ex: - How soon can you deliver the item?

      - Next Monday at the latest.

4. Explanations of how things are/were. (How…?)

Ex: - How did you fix that TV set so quickly?

      - My brother is a repairman.
