Ten ways to help you learn English vocabulary effectively. (Part II)
Have you planned to build a list of English vocabulary and start learning them? Do you also spend a lot of time investing in English flashcard sets? However, when speaking or writing, the English vocabulary you learn seems to not exist in your mind. So how do you improve this problem and is there a better way to learn?
6. Repeat at intervals
Repeating vocabulary words hundreds of times over the course of a day is not as effective as repeating them a few times over a period of time, perhaps days or weeks (i.e. spaced repetitions). . For example, use new vocabulary immediately. Then try to recall it in an hour. Review it briefly before you go to bed. Use that vocabulary again a day later. Finally, review it in a few days.
7. Go deeper into the root word
Before you look up new vocabulary in the dictionary, try to guess its meaning by looking at the root through the suffixes and prefixes. If you know a few languages, you'll start to recognize new words that share common roots. Researching the origins of new words can help you remember vocabulary better.
For example:
The prefix “Multi-” means “many” (multicultural), the prefix “mis-” means “wrongly” (misunderstand).
The suffix "-ian" is often used to refer to people (politician - police), the suffix "-less" means "not" (homeless - homeless / helpless - not helping).
8. Challenge yourself with a vocabulary game
Games are always the best way to learn vocabulary, no matter what age you are. Learnenglish.britishcouncil.org will be a website that will provide you with interesting challenges, so you can explore and expand your English vocabulary.
9. Write down new vocabulary
Write down the vocabulary you need to memorize or put them in a specific sentence. This will help you better understand the meaning of that vocabulary and stick the spelling in your memory. You can ask friends or teachers to help you correct grammar or spelling errors in your English sentences.
Instead of just writing for yourself, try participating in the text games on the Folding Story site. This is a very popular version of online English writing practice. In it, each player will take turns writing a line of English to create a story, rotating until the time ends. Each person has 3 minutes to write a line and score points according to the number of likes they receive for each line they write.
