THE SECRET TO IMPROVE YOUR READING SCORE ON THE TOEFL TEST

1: Read difficult texts

The best way to increase your reading ability is to read as much as possible in English. Not only will you increase your vocabulary and grammar knowledge, you'll also learn how to build a persuasive argument and how to keep your reader engaged throughout.

Newspapers and magazines are all good reading sources. Newspapers you can refer to include: The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Economist, Discover and Nature.

2: Choose an effective reading method for yourself

There are 4 popular reading methods:

Read the entire passage

Skim read the passage and then answer the questions

Answer the questions in each small reading passage

Read the question first

3: Allocate time appropriately

In the Reading section, you have 60-80 minutes to answer 36-56 questions. In each passage, there will be 12-14 questions, you should not spend more than 20 minutes on each passage. To be more detailed, spend 5 minutes reading and about 1 minute for each question.

4: Find specific evidence in the reading

All questions on the test can be answered from evidence from the reading. In other words, all the information you need to answer the question is in the text – you just have to find it.

5: Skip the difficult questions and come back to them later

If you get a difficult question, don't spend too much time worrying about it – skip it and move on to the next one. Once you've done the rest, go back to doing the difficult questions. If you still can't find the answer, you can use the method of elimination. You will not lose points if you answer incorrectly, so never leave a question blank.
