TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR PERFORMANCE IN THE DOUBLE PASSAGES SECTION OF THE TOEIC READING TEST

1. Identify the relationship between the two passages

To approach Double Passages effectively, test takers must first determine the logical relationship between the two texts, such as cause–effect, problem–solution, request–response, or schedule–announcement.

 2. Skim both passages to grasp the main ideas before reading the questions

Before attempting the questions, take a moment to skim through both passages to get a general understanding of the context, purpose, tone, and structure.

3. Read each question carefully and identify the type of information required

Carefully analyze the question prompt to determine whether it relates to a single passage or requires cross-referencing, and adjust your reading strategy accordingly.

4. Pay attention to keywords and use scanning to locate information

Once you know what information is being asked, identify keywords in the question and use the scanning technique to locate them or their synonyms in the passage.

5. Understand the context, not just isolated words or phrases

Interpret meanings based on sentence structure, tone, and implied intentions to accurately determine the correct response.

6. Pay attention to transition signals and discourse markers

Transitional words such as however, in contrast, therefore, in addition, and as a result provide valuable clues about the flow of ideas and the author’s intent. Recognizing these markers helps you comprehend the structure of the passage and answer inference or sequencing questions more confidently.

7. Recognize the purpose and format of each type of document

Familiarity with the function and tone of each type (informative, persuasive, confirmatory, etc.) will help you correctly answer questions related to the writer’s intent or expected action.

8. Pay close attention to cross-reference questions

Locate the relevant sections in each text and analyze how the information overlaps or responds.

9. Do not rely on outside knowledge or assumptions

Avoid making assumptions or applying your background knowledge. Always base your answers on explicit or clearly implied evidence from the text itself.

10. Practice regularly with authentic materials and review thoroughly

Consistent practice using real TOEIC-style Double Passages will help you develop familiarity with the structure and question types.
